Exemplar Maus - The Cattery
Our breeding program is primarily based on Grand Champion Silvers. We spent most of our time in search of the perfect stud to compliment Memphis' and Nephra's traits to produce kittens that exhibit exceptional qualities. They include clear and contrasting spots- the epitome of the Mau- a long sleek body, bright gooseberry-colored eyes and an exquisite bone structure applicable to the breed. More information on the traits and tradition is found in the Tradition page.
All our Maus and the cats we foster are raised with love in our home and are integrated with the whole family. Kittens get used to using the litter box at an early age and are familiar with the usual goings-on within a home like other animals, showers, the vacuum cleaner, hair dryer and music. All our cats are bathed, groomed and have their diets supplemented with vitamins and high-concentrate nutrients to promote a healthy and lustrous coat. We encourage a raw meat-based diet, which we dutifully make at home. They are fully vaccinated for Feline Rhinotracheitis-Calicivirus-Panleukemia-Chlamydia Psittaci, Rabies, Feline Leukemia & Feline Infectious Peritonis. All our cats are also treated for internal and external parasites and have annual check-ups to ensure a high standard of health. They are also shown at CFA ChampionshipCat Show in Singapore and the region whenever possible.
Kittens are bred minimally to ensure the health and vitality of the breeding pair. If you think you are interested in acquiring a Mau from Exemplar, please feel free to look through our site and contact us for more information if you need any. We will be pleased to answer any questions or enquiries.
We prefer to ship locally or within the Austral-Asian region but we will try our utmost to meet any adopters' needs. All cats come with a cat-acquisition contract and a 6-month replacement guarantee in cases of unforeseen genetic conditions. Written proof from a vet will be required in order for this clause to be applicable. All acquisitions are final and a deposit is required to hold a kitten. As we do not produce many litters a year, you might have to wait for some time in order to be placed with a suitable kitten.
Our kittens go to their new home at 16 weeks of age and come with a health certification by a vet, two vaccination shots, and their CFA pedigree papers. We only produce pet and show quality kittens and they will come with an airline-approved carrier (if shipping overseas), kitten food, their medical history and their favorite toy, if any. We welcome any further information needed on how to adopt your Egyptian Mau kitten today. Please stay tuned to our news page for updates on up-coming litters.
FAQs- Other Important Information You Should Know
Why do I have to wait for my kitten and why will it already be spayed?
Maus are extremely rare and there are only about 500 kittens born each year. Exemplar is the only breeder of Maus in Asia and chooses to remain a small cattery in order to give the best attention, love and care to all the cats. If you are serious about adopting a Mau, and spending your life with your new kitten, waiting a few months is worth it once you first lay your eyes on your new gem. While promoting the breed, we must ensure that we do not promote backyard breeding of the Mau, thus we have the kittens spayed before going to their new family. We choose to have the procedure done prior to the kitten leaving our home, so that they can recover in the loving arms of the family they have been used to since birth.
How do I know my new kitten is healthy?
A responsible breeder will ensure that the cat is free from diseases like feline leukemia virus (FeLV) and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV). Your kitten should be active and exhibit good muscle tone, without showing signs of illness like bald patches, flaky skin, sniffing, sneezing or any other visible signs of parasites. Flea droppings which look like black-colored sand are a sure sign of infestation. Ensure that the eyes are bright and clear without any discharge and that the ears are clean and pink inside. There should not be any foul discharge or smell. A sales contract will ensure that all parties are protected (more so for the cat) and that the health of the kitten is assured. Make sure your vet examines your new cat in the first few days of purchase to certify that it is indeed healthy.
What happens to my cat once it's spayed?
Cats that are spayed or neutered are much less distracted by sexual instincts and are more responsive to their family. They do not try to run outdoors as much, lowering the risks of them getting lost or injured. Cats that are spayed also do not go into heat and will be a relief to owners who have experienced other cats in heat that menstruate, howl or fight with other cats. If you cannot keep a 100% watch on your cats, neutering them will eliminate the shock of having a litter of kittens in your home. This saves considerable time, energy and money for the owner.
Are Egyptian Maus smart?
We've been told that they are the smartest breed of cat. Maus learn their names quickly and know the dos and don'ts in a home. They also realize when they've done something they shouldn't have and will run to their favourite hiding place immediately. Maus have been known to find their toys in cupboards and drawers and will tell you when they are ready to have another treat. Some Maus love to ride on human shoulders and Memphis even knows how to sit, stand on her hind legs and put her paws on your knee! Maus are inquisitive and can be absorbed by other pets like fish and hamsters, and even the television when their favorite cat program is on. An open window or door ajar will soon be noticed by them, so ensure that your home is cat-proof, especially if you live on high floors.
How often should I bathe and groom my Mau?
Maus have a short layered coat, so daily grooming is not really necessary, but your Mau would definitely benefit from scratching and a loving rub-down from you. They are groomers themselves and will take the time to preen and gleam their coat. Bathing them about once a month should suffice. Only let family members bathe your cat since some Maus are known to be timid. Close the bathroom door during the entire bath session and have all the toiletries ready. Adopt a calm attitude and continue to praise your cat in a pleasant tone while shampooing and conditioning her. Do not use too much strength while holding her and give her free reign if she needs to escape the water for a moment. Maus will benefit from a whitening shampoo to maintain a tarnish-free white basecoat.
